‘What if I can’t… will I have to wash dishes?’: Ashish Vidyarthi

In a candid interview with Siddharth Kannan, actor Ashish Vidyarthi revealed the financial challenges he faced shortly after winning the National Award for his role in Drohkaal. Despite the prestigious recognition, Ashish was struggling to pay his rent and found the prospect of hosting a celebration overwhelming.
Recalling the moment, Ashish said, “Govind Nihalani, the director, told me to book Mainland China for the party. I had only seen it from outside and had never even dreamt of eating there.”
Although encouraged by a friend to go ahead with the celebration, Ashish admitted to feeling anxious throughout the evening. “I was holding a glass of water with lime because I didn’t want to increase the bill by ordering vodka. Even the teetotallers wanted to drink that day. Even the vegetarians wanted to have meat!” he shared.
At one point, the actor nervously pulled Govind Nihalani aside and asked, “‘What if I can’t pay the bill? Will I have to wash dishes? Will the police come?’” The director’s reassurance that he would cover the cost brought immense relief and allowed Ashish to finally enjoy the occasion.
Ashish also reflected on his career path following the award, noting the financial responsibility he had towards his parents. This meant taking on any roles he could find, including appearances in several B-grade films.
Today, Ashish Vidyarthi has established himself as a versatile figure in the entertainment industry, working as an actor, motivational speaker, food vlogger, and most recently, as a contestant on The Traitors.
