Anurag Kashyap issues public apology for controversial Brahmin remark, vows to control anger

Mumbai:  Anurag Kashyap has issued an apology after his controversial remarks about the Brahmin community sparked widespread backlash. The director, known for films like Gangs of Wasseypur, took to Instagram on Tuesday to express regret for his words and assured that he would work on controlling his anger in the future.

In his apology, written in Hindi, Kashyap stated, “I lost my temper while responding to someone and, in doing so, I spoke in a way that hurt the entire Brahmin community. This is a community to which many important people in my life belong, and I deeply regret that my words have caused hurt to them. My family is also hurt, and so are many intellectuals whom I respect. I acknowledge that in making such a statement, I veered away from the core issue.”

Kashyap further added, “I sincerely apologise to the Brahmin community for the hurt caused. I never intended to target anyone, but in a moment of anger, I wrote something that was inappropriate. I apologise to my colleagues, my family, and society for the way I spoke. I promise to work on my anger and be more mindful of my words in the future. If I need to discuss any issue, I will ensure I use the right language. I hope you will forgive me.”

The controversy began after Kashyap responded to criticism of his upcoming film Phule, a biopic about social reformers Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule. Some perceived his comments as casteist, which led to a major uproar online and calls for legal action.

The incident has also led to a series of threats directed at Kashyap’s daughter, Aaliyah, as well as his family and colleagues, who received rape and death threats from online trolls. In the wake of the controversy, an FIR was filed against Kashyap in Jaipur, accusing him of using abusive language towards the Brahmin community.
