I always love my family but now...: Amaal Mallik reflects on mental health and personal struggles

Singer-composer Amaal Mallik recently took to his Instagram to request that media outlets refrain from sensationalising his struggles and to respect his family’s privacy. His plea comes after a deeply emotional post he shared earlier about his battle with clinical depression and strained family relationships, which he later deleted.

In his Instagram story, Amaal expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received from fans but urged the media to avoid harassing his family. "Thank you for the love and support, it truly means a lot, but I would request the media portals not to harass my family," his statement read. "Please don't sensationalize and give negative headlines to my vulnerability... It's a request. It's taken a lot for me to open up & it is a very tough time for me."

He further clarified that despite his struggles, his bond with his brother Armaan Mallik remains unbroken. "Nothing changes between us brothers, Armaan and I are one, and nothing can come between us. Love & Peace," Amaal added.

Amaal’s post comes after he shared a controversial and emotional disclosure about his mental health on social media. In a now-deleted post, the composer opened up about his ongoing struggle with depression, revealing the emotional toll it had taken on him. He also discussed his strained relationship with his brother Armaan, which he attributed to the influence of their parents.

The post shed light on Amaal’s perception of being undervalued in his family, despite having composed 126 songs over a decade-long career in the music industry. He stated that his lack of recognition from his family had impacted his mental health.

Amaal’s deleted post read in part, "The journey has been terrific for both of us, but the actions of my parents have been the reason we as brothers have gone too far from one another." He went on to explain how his parents' actions had hurt him deeply, especially when they undermined his relationships and self-worth. "I am clinically depressed because of these happenings. Yes, I have only myself to blame for my actions, but my self-worth has been diminished countless times by the actions of near and dear ones," Amaal shared.

While Amaal’s revelation has sparked conversations about the pressures of fame, none of his family members have publicly responded to his emotional disclosure. 

Adding to the emotional moment, singer's mother, Jyothi Mallik's last post on social media showed a mother-son bond with Amaal. The caption read: "YOU ARE MY FIRST LOVE, …THE ONE WHO MADE ME A MOM. I PROMISE TO BE BY YOUR SIDE, SUPPORTING YOU, and CHERISHING OUR JOURNEY TOGETHER FOREVER!!!"
