Actress who starred with Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth — Ended up as a sex worker, lived on streets and died alone

There was a time when she lit up the screen — an actress who captured hearts in the 1980s and early 90s through her work in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu cinema. But once the cameras stopped rolling, Nisha Noor slowly faded from public memory. Born in Tamil Nadu, her entry into films was almost accidental. She was married in her teens to a relative, but the marriage ended in divorce not long after.

Nisha played a variety of roles — both big and small — across multiple industries. She acted in films such as Veliyettam, Chuvappunaada, Mimics Parade, Iyer the Great and Devasuram. In Tamil cinema, she shared screen space with superstars Ulaganayakan Kamal Haasan and Thalaivar Rajinikanth. She had the rare opportunity to work under some of the most celebrated directors of the time.

But at the peak of her career, Nisha's life took a heartbreaking turn. She fell in love with a film producer, who allegedly deceived her. After allegedly taking all her savings, he abandoned her. With no financial security and film offers drying up, Nisha was left without a means to survive. She found no support from either her family or friends. Eventually, driven by extreme poverty and desperation, she was forced into sex work. It is also said that it was the same producer who pushed her into that life.

Once labelled a sex worker, the film industry shunned her completely. Slowly but surely, Nisha vanished from the cinema world. Years later, volunteers found a frail, emaciated woman lying by the side of a pilgrimage centre in Tamil Nadu. She was taken to a hospital. Only then did the shocking truth emerge — the woman was none other than former actress Nisha Noor.

Medical examinations revealed she was suffering from multiple health issues. How she ended up on the streets remained a mystery to many. Police investigations later revealed that she had been living with her mother, and after her mother’s death, she had no one left. She died in hospital in 2007 — alone, forgotten and carrying the weight of abandonment and isolation.
