A flight, a fireball and lives cut short: How actress Soundarya died in 2004

Sowmya Sathyanarayana, widely known by her stage name Soundarya, was a celebrated Telugu actress who tragically lost her life in a plane crash on April 17, 2004.
She was traveling to Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh, to campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the general elections. She boarded a single-engine Cessna 180 from Bengaluru’s Jakkur airstrip, accompanied by her brother Amarnath, BJP worker Ramesh Kadam, and pilot Joy Philips.
Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft stalled at a height of 150 feet, veered sharply to the left, and crashed nose-first onto the campus of Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra, University of Agricultural Sciences. The plane exploded on impact, and all four occupants died instantly.
Soundarya, who was 32 years old and pregnant, suffered fatal burns, leaving her body charred beyond recognition. The incident sent shockwaves across the country, with leaders such as Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna, and BJP leader Arun Jaitley expressing condolences. The BJP canceled all public programs that day as a mark of respect.
At the time, the crash was widely reported as an aviation accident, with initial investigations pointing to pilot error, as the aircraft allegedly failed to achieve the required climb speed, resulting in a stall and crash.
Murder allegations after 20 years
Two decades later, Soundarya’s death is once again in the headlines following a police complaint filed in Khammam district, Andhra Pradesh. The complainant, Chittimallu, has alleged that the crash was not accidental but a planned murder linked to a property dispute involving Telugu actor Mohan Babu.
While no official evidence supporting this claim has emerged, the allegations have sparked renewed interest in the circumstances of Soundarya’s death. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether they will launch an official investigation into the claims.
With the case now back in public focus, speculation continues over whether the crash was a tragic accident or if further scrutiny could reveal new details about one of Telugu cinema’s most devastating losses.
