Kochi: Veteran actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma has passed away on Friday. She was 79. The actress breathed her last after a prolonged battle with age-related health complications.

Ponnamma was admitted to a private hospital in Kochi several weeks ago, and her health had been in a gradual decline due to various complications. 

A noted figure in Malayalam cinema, Ponnamma's illustrious career spanned over six decades, during which she appeared in more than 700 films. Her journey began in Malayalam theatre in the late 1950s, and she soon became a prominent figure on the silver screen, known for her iconic portrayals of mothers and grandmothers. Her roles opposite legendary actors such as Sathyan, Prem Nazir, Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Suresh Gopi are fondly remembered and celebrated by audiences.

Her on-screen chemistry with Mohanlal was particularly cherished, making her a beloved figure among fans. Ponnamma's last appearance on screen was in 2022, after which her health began to deteriorate, leading to her spending most of her time at home.

Ponnamma's husband passed away in 2011, and she is survived by her daughter, who resides in the United States.  Kaviyoor Ponnamma's passing marks the end of an era for Malayalam cinema. Her contributions to the industry and her memorable performances have left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
