34-year mystery solved! Director Joshiy reveals who Mammootty’s daughter was in ‘Kauravar’

Kochi: For over three decades, Malayalam Cinema enthusiasts have debated one of the most poignant secrets in Indian film history: In Lohithadas and Joshiy's 1992 classic 'Kauravar', which of the three girls was actually the real daughter of Antony, the iconic character played by megastar Mammootty?

Now, 34 years after the legendary crime drama hit the silver screen, director Joshiy has finally lifted the veil on this long-held cinematic mystery.

A climax that left generations guessing

Released in 1992, Kauravar, penned by the legendary Lohithadas and directed by hitmaker Joshiy, is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Malayalam Cinema. Starring Mammootty in the lead role of Antony alongside powerhouse performers like Thilakan, Murali and Kannada superstar Vishnuvardhan, the film built intense suspense right up to its emotional climax.

Central to the story's emotional core was Antony's painful quest as an ex-convict searching for his long-lost child. Audiences still warmly remember the iconic scene where Mammootty's character sings the immortal lullaby "Muthu mani thooval tharaam..." while gazing at three young women -- Sreekutty, Nandininkutty and Parukutty -- tormented by the knowledge that one of them is his daughter.
 

In the film, when Vishnuvardhan’s character lies dying from a stab wound, Antony desperately asks him to reveal the truth. However, he responds that he loved all three equally and never differentiated between them. Although Murali’s character uncovers the answer near the end, Antony interrupts him, choosing to embrace all three girls as his own rather than single one out.

Neither Joshiy nor Lohithadas had ever disclosed the true identity in subsequent interviews until now.

The clue lay in the facial features

Breaking his silence, director Joshiy revealed that he and Lohithadas had indeed finalised who Antony’s real daughter was right at the scripting stage, leaving a subtle visual clue for discerning viewers.

"Among the three girls -- Sreekutty, Nandinikutty and Parukutty --the first and third had long, oval faces, whereas Nandininkutty had a round face. Matching the facial structure and features, Nandinikutty was designed to be Mammootty’s character Antony’s daughter," he revealed.

Joshiy shared that the creative duo deliberately kept the clue subtle so that observant audience members might figure it out on their own through facial resemblance. Intriguingly, the secret was guarded so closely that even Mammootty himself was not informed during the shoot!
