Taylor Swift to become most-awarded VMA artist with new Artist Director honour

Taylor Swift is set to add another milestone to her already record-breaking MTV Video Music Awards run. The singer-songwriter will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors at the 2026 ceremony, becoming the first recipient of the newly introduced award.

The new honour recognises artists whose work behind the camera has pushed the boundaries of music videos and expanded the art of visual storytelling.

MTV and CBS said the award celebrates a sustained body of directorial work and a distinctive creative voice.

For Swift, the recognition also comes with a major VMA record. She currently shares the record for the most MTV VMA wins with Beyoncé, with 30 awards each. Once she receives the new Artist Director honour, Swift's tally will rise to 31 VMAs, making her the most-awarded artist in the history of the ceremony.

Swift has established herself as a director alongside her career as a singer-songwriter. She is a seven-time VMA nominee for Best Director and has won the category four times. Her directing credits include music videos such as ‘The Man’, ‘cardigan’, ‘willow’, ‘Anti-Hero’, ‘Bejeweled’, ‘Lavender Haze’, ‘Fortnight’ featuring Post Malone, ‘The Fate of Ophelia’ and ‘Opalite’. She also directed ‘All Too Well: The Short Film’.

The honour arrives as Swift heads into the 2026 VMAs with nine competitive nominations. Madonna leads the nominations with 11, while Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter follow with seven each. Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson have five nominations apiece.

When and where are the 2026 MTV VMAs?

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will take place on September 27 in Los Angeles. The two-hour ceremony will air live on CBS and MTV from 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT and will stream on Paramount+ in the US. The show will also become available internationally on Paramount+ and MTV the following day.

The ceremony will be hosted by Snoop Dogg. Madonna is set to open the show, marking her first VMA performance in 23 years. Other announced performers include Lisa, Raye, Sienna Spiro, Shaboozey, Gunna, GENER8ION and Yung Lean.

Who will receive the Video Vanguard Award?

Nirvana will receive the 2026 Video Vanguard Award. The honour has previously gone to major names including Beyoncé, Madonna, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Missy Elliott.

The 2026 ceremony will also see the return of the Best Dance category after a seven-year gap. The awards have 26 first-time nominees this year, adding several new names to the VMA lineup.

Fan voting is underway across 13 categories and is scheduled to close on September 25 at 6 p.m. ET, while voting for Best New Artist will remain open during the ceremony.

With the inaugural Artist Director honour, Swift's growing body of work behind the camera is being recognised alongside her achievements as a performer, while the ceremony itself prepares to mark another chapter in VMA history.
