I can’t carry my own children: Selena Gomez opens up about health concerns

Selena Gomez has revealed that she is unable to carry her own children due to health concerns. The 32-year-old singer and actress shared this personal detail during a cover interview with Vanity Fair, expressing that discovering she couldn’t have a safe pregnancy was a reality she needed to come to terms with.
“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children," Gomez told the publication. "I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while."
During her interview, Gomez expressed her desire to become a mother and said she is exploring the possibilities of surrogacy or adoption. She noted that her own mother, Mandy Teefey, is adopted, a fact that her family cherishes.
“It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone," she said. "I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me."
Gomez has been candid in the past about her battle with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the body's healthy tissues. The condition, which has no cure, can be managed with medication. In 2017, she underwent a kidney transplant as a result of her lupus.
Additionally, Gomez has been open about her struggles with bipolar disorder, a subject she delved into in her documentary *My Mind and Me*. In a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, she mentioned that the medication she takes for her bipolar disorder may also impact her ability to have a safe pregnancy.
Gomez continued, "It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people."
Looking forward to her future as a parent, Gomez expressed her excitement about the journey, even if it doesn’t unfold as she initially expected. "I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”
Gomez is currently dating music producer Benny Blanco.
