‘Thenmavin Kombathu’, the 1994 Mohanlal-Shobana starrer directed by Priyadarshan, will be back in theatres worldwide on October 8 in a newly restored 4K version.

Ahead of the re-release, Mohanlal shared his memories of the film and said it remains one of his favourite collaborations with Priyadarshan. The actor said the film holds a special place in his career for its memorable frames, humour and the warmth it created among audiences. Mohanlal will also return to theatres as Manikyan, the character he played in the film.

Mohanlal remembers ‘Thenmavin Kombathu’

Reflecting on the film, Mohanlal described ‘Thenmavin Kombathu’ as one of his most cherished films with Priyadarshan. He recalled how the film combined beautiful visuals with comedy that connected with audiences.

The actor also expressed his excitement about experiencing the film again on the big screen in 4K, this time as a restored version that brings back Manikyan and the world of the film for a new generation of viewers.

Released in 1994, ‘Thenmavin Kombathu’ has remained popular for more than three decades. Mohanlal's Manikyan, Shobana's Karthumbi and Nedumudi Venu's Sreekrishnan Thampuran continue to be among the film's most remembered characters.

Its rural setting, romance, comedy and memorable supporting characters have also helped the film retain its place among Malayalam cinema's evergreen favourites.

What is new about the 4K version?

The re-release has been prepared using the original 35mm negative, which was scanned in 4K and digitally restored to a Super 4K standard. The restoration aims to improve the visual quality while retaining the look and character of the original film.

That means KV Anand's cinematography will get a fresh lease of life on the big screen, with the film's landscapes, locations and carefully composed frames presented in greater detail.

The restoration has been carried out with an effort to preserve the visual identity of the original rather than giving the film a completely new look.

Dolby Atmos to add to the theatrical experience

The visual restoration is accompanied by a new Dolby Atmos sound mix.

Berny-Ignatius' music, Gireesh Puthenchery's songs, the film's comic moments and its ambient sounds have been remixed to make the theatrical experience more immersive.

For audiences who watched the film in the 1990s, the re-release offers a chance to revisit familiar moments on a larger and technically upgraded canvas. For younger viewers, it brings an acclaimed Malayalam classic to theatres in a format designed for today's big-screen experience.

Written and directed by Priyadarshan, ‘Thenmavin Kombathu’ stars Mohanlal, Shobana and Nedumudi Venu in the lead roles. The cast also includes Sreenivasan, Kaviyoor Ponnamma, KPAC Lalitha, Sukumari, Kuthiravattam Pappu, Sankaradi, Geetha Vijayan and Sonia, among others.

The film was recognised at both the National and Kerala State Film Awards. KV Anand received the National Film Award for Best Cinematography, while Sabu Cyril was recognised for Production Design. The film also won five Kerala State Film Awards.

The music was composed by Berny-Ignatius, with SP Venkatesh handling the background score. Gireesh Puthenchery wrote the songs, while Sabu Cyril served as the production designer.

Produced by N Gopalakrishnan under the Prasidhi Creations and Surya Cine Arts banners, the 4K restoration has been undertaken by Matinee Now and E4 Entertainment.
