Vijay scripts history: 'Jana Nayagan' becomes first film led by sitting Tamil Nadu CM in 50 years

Tamil Nadu woke up to more than just the release of one of the year's biggest films. With 'Jana Nayagan' arriving in theatres on July 23, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has achieved a feat that has rarely been witnessed in Indian politics, becoming the first serving Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in nearly five decades to headline a commercial feature film.

The H Vinoth directorial marks an extraordinary intersection of politics and cinema.

While Vijay completed the film before assuming office, its theatrical release comes after he took oath as Chief Minister, placing him in an exclusive chapter of Tamil Nadu's political history.

The last leader to accomplish something similar was the legendary MG Ramachandran (MGR).

Already one of Tamil cinema's biggest stars before entering politics, MGR became Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in 1977.

His 1978 release 'Madhuraiyai Meetta Sundharapandiyan', based on Akilan's novel Kayalvizhi, remains the last major film to feature a sitting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in the lead role. Interestingly, it also turned out to be MGR's final film as an actor.

Over the decades, Tamil Nadu has produced several leaders with deep roots in the entertainment industry.

M Karunanidhi was an acclaimed screenwriter, J Jayalalithaa was a celebrated actress, while MK Stalin has appeared in documentaries and campaign films.

However, none of them had a mainstream theatrical release while occupying the Chief Minister's office. That changes with 'Jana Nayagan'.

The film, produced by KVN Productions, stars Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol and Mamitha Baiju, alongside Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani.

It was originally slated for a Pongal 2026 release but eventually reached cinemas after a delay of more than six months.

The postponement fuelled speculation that Vijay's political rise may have influenced the release timeline.

However, both the makers and director H Vinoth maintained that the delay stemmed from procedural issues during the CBFC certification process.

According to the production house, objections raised at the examining committee stage resulted in the film being referred to the Revision Committee, extending the certification process rather than reflecting any political intervention.

For Vijay's fans, the release carries emotional significance as well. Widely promoted as his final feature film before dedicating himself entirely to public life, 'Jana Nayagan' serves as both a farewell to cinema and the beginning of a new political chapter.

Trade expectations are equally massive.
Reports suggest the film recorded around Rs 20 crore in domestic advance bookings, with overseas pre-sales touching Rs 15 crore. Industry trackers are also predicting a worldwide opening of nearly Rs 90 crore.

Tamil Nadu has once again witnessed a serving Chief Minister leading a major theatrical release, making the film as much a political milestone as a cinematic event.
