Sandra Bullock has spoken publicly about the private grief she experienced following the death of her longtime partner, photographer Bryan Randall, describing the years surrounding his illness and death as an emotionally difficult period. The actor opened up about Randall’s battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) during a recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast, hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes.

Randall died on August 5, 2023, aged 57, after a three-year battle with ALS. Bullock and Randall had been together for eight years, having begun dating in 2015. Speaking about the loss, Bullock revealed that she had started grieving for Randall years before his death as his illness progressed.

Bryan Randall asked Bullock to keep his ALS diagnosis private

Bullock said Randall made it clear that he did not want his diagnosis discussed publicly, and she respected his wishes throughout his illness.

“He asked me not to share. I know why he asked me not to,” Bullock said.

The actor initially kept the diagnosis within a very small circle, with her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, being the only person aware of Randall’s condition for some time. Bullock said carrying the secret while caring for Randall left her feeling increasingly alone.

“I wasn’t allowed to speak about it. That was the request and I tried – I honored it,” she explained.

Bullock said the experience became particularly isolating during the Covid-19 pandemic. At the same time, she was caring for Randall and raising her children, making an already difficult situation even more challenging.

‘I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed’

Bullock described the emotional impact of watching Randall’s condition change over the course of their relationship. She said he had been ill for roughly half of the time they were together and that his illness altered their relationship long before his death.

“I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” Bullock said.

She also reflected on how the person she knew seemed to disappear before his physical death.

“My person left a lot earlier than the body left,” she said. “I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”

Bullock said she was able to function by focusing on the practical demands of Randall’s illness and caring for their family. She described ALS as a lengthy diagnostic process involving repeated tests and assessments, while also explaining that she had to prepare quietly for what might come next.

“You have to quietly plan. And I’m a very good planner with illness,” she said.

Raising children while caring for Randall

The actor said Randall’s illness also affected the children in their family. Bullock and Randall helped raise Bullock’s son Louis and daughter Laila, while Randall also had a daughter, Skylar Staten Randall, from a previous relationship.

Bullock said the situation was especially difficult for her daughter, who regarded Randall as a father figure.

“I had two young kids that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw [Randall] as a father figure.”

As the physical effects of Randall’s illness were accompanied by mental health challenges, Bullock said the combination created an especially dark period for the family.

“When the physical illness was then coupled with the mental health aspect of things — and it’s something that people don’t talk about… it was a trifecta that was pretty dark.”

Eventually, Bullock began confiding in close friends, including Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, the wife of Bateman. Their support helped her cope with the weight of keeping Randall’s condition private.

Randall’s family honoured his wish for privacy

Following Randall’s death in August 2023, his family confirmed that he had died peacefully after battling ALS for three years. They said he had chosen to keep his illness private and asked for continued privacy as they mourned his death.

Randall, who began his career as a model before becoming a photographer, met Bullock in 2015. The pair reportedly began dating after Bullock hired him to photograph her son Louis’ fifth birthday celebration. They later made public appearances together, including at the Los Angeles premiere of ‘Our Brand Is Crisis’ and Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux’s wedding.

After Randall’s death, Bullock stepped away from the spotlight for a period to focus on herself and her children. She is now returning to acting with ‘Practical Magic 2’, the sequel to the 1998 fantasy film starring Bullock and Nicole Kidman.

The film, which also features returning cast members Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest alongside Joey King, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, Lee Pace and Solly McLeod, is scheduled to release in theatres on September 10.

Bullock’s SmartLess episode is currently available to SiriusXM early-access subscribers and is scheduled for wider release across podcast platforms on August 24.
