After Dileep walks free, a look at Indian actors who stood trial for sexual assault

Kochi, Dec 8: Actor Dileep was acquitted today by the Ernakulam Additional Sessions Court in the 2017 actress abduction and sexual assault case, ending an eight-year legal battle that dominated public attention and reshaped debates on accountability within the Malayalam film industry.
With the court ruling that the prosecution failed to prove conspiracy or involvement, Dileep now joins a short but prominent list of Indian actors who have undergone high-profile sexual-assault trials—some convicted, others still facing charges, and many who continue to deny allegations.
A look at major Indian actors who have faced sexual assault cases backed by verifiable public records:
1. Shiney Ahuja – Convicted in 2011 Rape Case
Perhaps the most widely documented conviction of an Indian actor in a sexual-assault case, Shiney Ahuja was arrested in 2009 after his domestic worker accused him of rape. In 2011, a Mumbai fast-track court convicted him and sentenced him to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment.
The survivor later turned hostile, but the court upheld the conviction based on medical and forensic evidence. This remains one of Bollywood’s most significant sexual-assault judgements involving a celebrity.
2. Vijay Babu (Malayalam) – 2022 Sexual Assault Case
In April 2022, a woman actor filed a complaint in Ernakulam accusing producer-actor Vijay Babu of rape, physical assault, emotional manipulation, and blackmail. Kerala Police registered a case under serious IPC sections. Babu left the country, prompting a lookout notice; upon return, he was questioned by the police. In June 2022, the Kerala High Court granted him anticipatory bail with strict conditions. The case remains under judicial process. Babu denies all allegations.
3. Alok Nath – Rape Allegation, FIR Registered (2018)
Veteran actor Alok Nath faced one of the most prominent #MeToo-era cases when writer-producer Vinta Nanda accused him of rape dating back to the 1990s. In 2018, Mumbai Police registered an FIR for rape and related charges after her formal complaint. Nath denied the allegations, but the FIR and investigation were widely reported across national media. Although the case faced legal complexity due to the time elapsed, it remains a major sexual-assault allegation involving a senior Indian actor.
4. Karan Oberoi – 2019 Rape & Extortion Case
Television actor and singer Karan Oberoi was arrested in May 2019 after a woman filed an FIR accusing him of rape and blackmail. The complaint alleged he assaulted her and recorded videos to extort money.
Oberoi was granted bail after the complainant herself was later arrested for staging a fake attack to influence the case. While Oberoi denies the allegations, the case remains one of the most talked-about celebrity sexual-assault FIRs in recent years.
5. Mahaakshay Chakraborty – Rape & Cheating Case (Court-Ordered FIR, 2018)
In 2018, a Delhi court ordered police to register an FIR against Mahaakshay Chakraborty—actor and son of Mithun Chakraborty—after a woman alleged rape, cheating, and forced miscarriage. Following the court directive, Mumbai Police filed the FIR and began investigation. The Bombay High Court later refused interim protection from arrest. Mahaakshay has denied all allegations; the matter proceeded legally based on the court-ordered FIR.
Why Dileep’s Acquittal Stands Apart
Dileep’s case involved criminal conspiracy, allegations of orchestrating an abduction, and digital evidence — a far more complex case than most other celebrity sexual-assault FIRs.
With his complete acquittal, the verdict raises broader questions about:
- The difficulty of proving conspiracy in sexual-assault cases
- Protection for survivors in high-profile trials
- The influence of celebrity status on long legal processes
Yet legally, Dileep now stands cleared, while several other actors continue to carry unresolved legal battles or past convictions.
