‘Both our rings were bought by Mona’: Boney Kapoor on marriage to Sridevi

When film producer Boney Kapoor married the late superstar Sridevi in 1996, it sparked widespread controversy. At the time, Boney was still married to Mona Kapoor and was already a father to Arjun and Anshula Kapoor.

After his second marriage, he distanced himself from his first family, creating a visible rift between the two sides.

In a new conversation with Chanda Kochhar on her YouTube channel, Boney revealed that he had never hidden his relationship with Sridevi from Mona. In fact, he claimed that Mona herself purchased the wedding rings for him and Sridevi.

Boney recalled how his children from his first marriage, Arjun and Anshula, stood by their half-sisters, Janhvi and Khushi, after Sridevi’s passing in 2018. Reflecting on his late first wife, who died in 2012, he said, “My first wife, I told her.

I had confessed to her.” Pointing at the ring on his finger, he added, “Look at this ring I’m wearing, and the one Sridevi wore — both were bought by Mona. I told her openly, and that’s why she raised the children without any bitterness towards me or the other kids.”

He acknowledged, however, that Arjun and Anshula must have faced emotional strain during that time.

Sharing a personal memory, Boney said he still treasures a letter from his son Arjun, asking him, “Why don’t you come home?”

He admitted, “I used to feel terrible. What could I do? I was torn. On one side was my wife Sridevi, who had lost her parents and was alone. On the other, my children, who at least had their mother and grandparents with them.”

Explaining his choice, he continued, “I had to make a decision. I loved my children — I loved them even more back then. But I had to stay strong and manage those circumstances. I’ve always loved all my kids.

I also respected my ex-wife because she never tried to pit one side against the other. My kids felt bad seeing their mother suffer, and I understand that. Today, I feel blessed that all four children are together.”

Over the years, Arjun and Anshula have openly spoken about how they made the effort to support Janhvi and Khushi after their mother Sridevi’s sudden death.
