Mirzapur: The Movie gets A certificate with 35-second footage removed; here’s what CBFC changed

Mirzapur: The Movie is heading to theatres on September 4, but not entirely unchanged. The much-awaited theatrical adaptation of the popular streaming franchise has received an A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), with around 35 seconds of intimate footage removed as part of the certification process.

The film has been cleared with a runtime of 197 minutes and 19 seconds — 3 hours, 17 minutes and 19 seconds. The CBFC’s modifications were largely related to language, dialogues and intimate sequences. The board did not seek cuts to the film’s violent or graphic portions.

What did the CBFC change in Mirzapur: The Movie?

According to the certification details, certain expletives were muted at four points in the film, while six abusive words were replaced. The board also directed changes to some dialogues, including the line “Galey se lag gar.”

A word appearing in the first half was replaced with “kamar”, while the word “lanth”, meaning idiot, was modified in the second half. A reference related to caste was also changed following the CBFC’s direction.

The certification process also resulted in modifications to two intimate sequences. The CBFC instructed the makers to reduce the impact of both scenes by 50 per cent through changes to visuals and sound.

One of the sequences appears before the interval, while the other features in the second half. The certification record indicates that approximately 35 seconds of intimate material was removed.

Interestingly, the board did not ask the makers to remove any portions of the film’s violent or graphic scenes.

Mirzapur moves from OTT to the big screen

Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, Mirzapur: The Movie marks the franchise’s transition from streaming to the theatrical format.

The film is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment, with Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani serving as co-producers.

The ensemble cast includes Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Jitendra Kumar, Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Mohit Malik, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Shekhar Gaur, Shweta Tripathi, Sonal S Chauhan, Anangsha Biswas, Shaji Choudhary, Sushant Singh and Ravi Kishan.

Mirzapur: The Movie is scheduled to release in theatres on September 4, 2026.
