Drishyam 1 and 2 recap: Everything to remember before watching Drishyam 3

Vijay Salgaonkar has spent years making sure his family’s secret stays buried. Before ‘Drishyam 3’ brings him back, here’s a look at how the entire story began and where ‘Drishyam 2’ left things.
With the third and final chapter releasing on October 2, here is a simple recap of everything that happened so far.
Drishyam 1: How did Sam die?
Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) is a cable operator in Goa who is extremely close to his wife Nandini (Shriya Saran) and daughters Anju (Ishita Dutta) and Anu (Mrunal Jadhav).
Their peaceful life changes when Sam Deshmukh, the son of Inspector General Meera Deshmukh (Tabu), secretly records Anju at a school camp and later uses the video to blackmail her. When Sam turns up at the Salgaonkar home, a confrontation follows. During the struggle, Anju hits him with an iron rod and Sam dies.
Anju and Nandini panic and initially hide Sam's body. When Vijay learns what happened, he takes charge. Knowing that the police will eventually come looking for Sam, he creates an elaborate story to make it appear that his family was elsewhere when the murder happened.
This is where Vijay's obsession with films becomes useful. He takes his family to Panaji and carefully creates evidence of their movements, including tickets, bills and other records. He also makes sure people remember seeing the family on the crucial date.
The family repeatedly sticks to the same story about their trip, making it difficult for the police to prove otherwise. Vijay's plan works because he is not simply creating an alibi. He is creating a version of events that other people remember as fact.
The police become increasingly suspicious, but they cannot find Sam's body. By the end of the film, it is revealed that Vijay had secretly buried Sam's remains beneath the foundation of the police station that was under construction.
Drishyam 2: The case comes back
Seven years later, Vijay's family appears to have moved on. Vijay is now more successful and owns a cinema theatre, while the family continues to live with the emotional consequences of what happened. But the case is not completely forgotten.
A criminal named David Braganza, who had been on the run after committing a murder, remembers seeing Vijay near the under-construction police station around the time Sam disappeared. Years later, David's information reaches the police and the investigation is reopened.
This time, IG Tarun Ahlawat (Akshaye Khanna) takes charge of the investigation. The police excavate the site of the old police station and discover human remains. It looks like the breakthrough Meera and the police have been waiting for.
Vijay, however, has already thought several steps ahead.
The family is questioned again, and the pressure becomes intense. The police even obtain a recording that threatens to break their carefully maintained story. Eventually, Vijay falsely confesses to killing Sam in an attempt to protect his family. But then comes the biggest twist.
When the DNA results arrive, the remains recovered from the police station do not match Sam.
The explanation comes through Murad Ali (Saurabh Shukla), the writer Vijay had been working with on a film script. Vijay had apparently used the story of Sam's murder as the basis for a fictional crime thriller and had even created an alternate ending in case his original plan failed.
In that alternate plan, the protagonist obtains the remains of another person of a similar age and sex and arranges for them to replace the original remains before DNA testing. The film strongly implies that this is the contingency Vijay had prepared for.
With the DNA evidence failing to connect the skeleton to Sam, the case against Vijay collapses.
Vijay is released because there is no conclusive evidence linking him to Sam's murder, and the family receives legal protection from further investigation into the same case.
But Vijay has not forgotten Meera and her husband Mahesh (Rajat Kapoor), who have spent years grieving their son. In the final stretch, Sam's actual cremated remains are anonymously returned to his parents. Mahesh chooses to accept the remains and tells Meera that they need to let go. Vijay watches from a distance before quietly leaving.
At the end of Drishyam 2, Vijay has escaped conviction, but the truth has never really disappeared. Sam is dead. Vijay knows what happened. His family knows. Meera and Mahesh know that Vijay was involved, even though they could not prove it in court. And most importantly, Vijay has spent years building layers of protection around the original crime.
Drishyam 3: The conclusion
‘Drishyam 3’ is scheduled to release on October 2, 2026, with Ajay Devgn returning as Vijay. Tabu, Shriya Saran and Ishita Dutta also return, while Jaideep Ahlawat joins the cast. The third film is being presented as the final chapter of the Hindi franchise.
