Dhanush and Kareena Kapoor Khan could soon share the screen for the first time in a Hindi film directed by PS Mithran and backed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. While the project is yet to receive an official green light, Mithran has now confirmed that discussions are underway.

Director PS Mithran, who is currently promoting ‘Sardar 2’, has addressed reports about the project and confirmed that discussions are underway. Speaking to Cinema Vikatan, Mithran said the team is working around dates and expressed hope that the project will take shape.

The update comes weeks after reports surfaced that Dhanush and Kareena were being considered for an ambitious Hindi film that Bhansali is set to produce, with Mithran in talks to direct.

Very little about the story has been officially revealed so far. Reports have described the untitled project as a large-scale mythological adventure set against a jungle backdrop. According to Bollywood Hungama, the film is still in the writing stage, with the makers reportedly planning pre-production around November 2026 and principal photography from January 2027.

The report also suggests that the female lead is being designed as a substantial role rather than a conventional supporting part. Kareena is said to have shown interest in the project, although she has not officially signed the film yet.

Dhanush and Kareena's first film together

If the project comes together, one of its biggest attractions will be seeing Dhanush and Kareena share the screen for the first time.

The film would also give Mithran his first Hindi directorial outing. Known for Tamil films including ‘Irumbu Thirai’, ‘Hero’ and the ‘Sardar’ franchise, the filmmaker has largely worked within Tamil cinema so far.

Kareena and Bhansali: a collaboration years in the making

Perhaps the most intriguing part of the proposed project is the possibility of Kareena finally working with Bhansali. The two have a long-standing professional history that goes back to the early 2000s, when Kareena was considered for ‘Devdas’. She underwent a screen test for the role of Paro, which eventually went to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Kareena later spoke publicly about feeling hurt by the way the situation played out, while Bhansali gave his own version of events and said the screen test was not a guarantee that she would be cast.

The proposed Dhanush film could therefore mark their first collaboration, more than two decades after that much-discussed episode.

Meanwhile, Kareena is gearing up for ‘Daayra’, Meghna Gulzar's crime drama co-starring Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film is scheduled to release in theatres on September 18, 2026.
