Chennai: To manage the increasing number of vehicles in Dhanushkodi, the Tamil Nadu Coastal Zone Management Authority has instructed the Tourism Development Corporation to implement an e-pass system in the region. This initiative follows the model successfully used in Ooty and Kodaikanal to regulate tourist movement.

Dhanushkodi, one of Tamil Nadu’s most popular coastal destinations, sees a high influx of visitors, especially to Arichal Muna, the southernmost point of the land. Currently, vehicles are allowed up to a restricted area near Arichal Muna, but authorities are now planning to introduce a designated transit plaza to further streamline traffic.

The proposed transit plaza, located five kilometers from Arichal Muna along the national highway, will serve as the main parking area for private vehicles. From there, tourists will be required to use special buses arranged by the authorities to reach the destination.

The e-pass system aims to reduce congestion, protect the fragile coastal ecosystem, and enhance the tourist experience. Once implemented, visitors will need to obtain an e-pass before bringing vehicles into the restricted zones, similar to the systems in place at Ooty and Kodaikanal.

Authorities believe the move will not only ease traffic but also improve infrastructure and sustainability efforts in the region, ensuring a more organized and eco-friendly travel experience for visitors.
