From Kollam to Kasaragod: Solar boats to open new tourism frontiers in Kerala

Alappuzha: To promote inland water tourism in the state, the Water Transport Department in Kerala is set to boost revenue in the sector by introducing small solar-powered boats equipped with modern amenities. These boats, which can accommodate up to 20 passengers, will initially operate in key districts of Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.
Plans are underway to design boats specifically suited for travel in rivers and streams. A larger 30-seat boat is also being developed for use at backwaters in Kuttanad. In Kollam, the department will also introduce boats with outboard engines, which will take tourists to the unique mangrove areas on Munroe Island.
For those seeking a scenic backwater experience, a new trip from Vaikom to Kakkathuruthu Island in Alappuzha is being planned. Kakkathuruthu Island is featured on the National Geographic Channel’s World Tourism Map, adding to its appeal.
These new initiatives come as a response to the profitability of existing water transport services. The department’s current offerings are the Vega and See Kuttanad boats in Alappuzha, the See Ashtamudi boats in Kollam, the solar-powered Indra boat in Ernakulam, and various passenger and tourist boats in Kannur and Alappuzha.
Director of the Water Transport Department Shaji V Nair stressed that the new boats aim not only to enhance the tourism experience, but also to make these services accessible to the general public.
"We are launching various types of boats suited to local characteristics, ensuring that tourism benefits all sectors of society," he said.
