Google Drive is a powerful cloud storage platform that allows users to upload, organise, and share files seamlessly across devices. Whether you're a beginner or a regular user, this guide covers everything you need to know—from creating folders to managing shared files—helping you maximise Google Drive’s features for effortless file storage and collaboration.

Getting started with Google Drive

To start using Google Drive, visit drive.google.com on your computer or open the mobile app. Click on New in the top-left corner and choose:

  • New folder – Create a dedicated folder for organising files.
  • File upload – Add individual files such as PDFs, images, or videos.
  • Folder upload – Upload an entire folder from your device.
  • Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides – Create new documents instantly.

Navigating Google Drive

Home section: The Home tab provides quick access to recent files, shared documents, and upcoming meeting attachments. Use the search bar to locate files based on type, modification date, or owner.

My Drive section: My Drive contains all files you've uploaded or created. To set Home or My Drive as your default page:

  1. Open Google Drive.
  2. Click on Settings (gear icon).
  3. Select Home or My Drive under the "Start page" option.

Managing your files

Finding file details: To check a file’s history, sharing status, or recent edits:

  1. Click on the file.
  2. Select View details from the options menu.

Sharing files and folders: To share a file or folder:

  1. Click on the item.

Deleting files

To remove files:

For quick access, you can Star important files:

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Organise > Add to starred.
  3. Find the file later in the Starred section.

Using Google Drive on Android

Home page navigation

When opening Google Drive on an Android device, you will see:

  • Suggested tab – Files frequently accessed.
  • Activity tab – Files recently updated or modified.

Starred section

To mark files as important:

  1. Locate the file/folder.
  2. Tap the More actions (three-dot menu).
  3. Select Add to starred.

Shared section

View files shared with you:

  1. Tap More actions next to a file.
  2. Select Share and enter recipient details.
