How to apply for a rooftop solar panel subsidy in India

Launched on 15 February 2024, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a government initiative to promote rooftop solar installations by offering up to a 40% subsidy to households. The goal is to provide free electricity, reduce government electricity expenses, and boost the use of renewable energy across 1 crore homes in India.

Eligibility
- Must own a house with a suitable rooftop
- Should have a valid electricity connection
- Must not have previously availed a solar panel subsidy
Documents required
- Proof of identity
- Proof of address
- Recent electricity bill
- Roof ownership certificate
Steps to apply
- Visit the portal: https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in
- Register with the following details:
- State
- Electricity Distribution Company (DISCOM)
- Electricity Consumer Number
- Mobile number
- Email ID
- Log in using your Consumer Number and Mobile Number
- Fill in the application form for rooftop solar installation
- Wait for feasibility approval from DISCOM
- Once approved, install the solar plant using any vendor registered with your DISCOM
- After installation, submit plant details and apply for a net meter
- Post inspection, DISCOM will issue a commissioning certificate
- Upload your bank account details and a cancelled cheque through the portal
- Subsidy amount will be transferred to your account within 30 days
