Beware! Counterfeit medicines posing as leading brands thrive in Indian drug market

Thrissur: There are once again signs of a surge in counterfeit drugs in the Indian pharmaceutical market. Even among the top-selling brands of leading companies, fake products have been found. In an inspection carried out by the Central Drugs Division last month, two such fake drugs were discovered. As a result, inspections have been intensified.

A sample of Pan 40, a medication for stomach-related disorders, from Bihar was found to be counterfeit. The manufacturers of the brand have confirmed in writing to the authorities that this batch of medicine was not produced by them. Similarly, a sample of Augmentin 650, an antibiotic containing Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid, from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh was also found to be fake. The manufacturers have stated that this batch was not produced by them either. Investigations are ongoing in both cases.

Authorities are investigating the manufacturers' identities and the potential side effects of the counterfeit medicines. Searches for counterfeit drugs have been ramped up in both states, and drug control divisions in Telangana and West Bengal have also intensified their inspections.
