When Sai Pallavi stepped out for the Los Angeles premiere of ‘Ramayana’, the hot pink did the announcing for her.

The film’s world premiere was set for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on October 27, with a full house of 945 guests that included Hollywood celebrities, filmmakers and international press. It was a room full of people used to red carpets. Sai Pallavi, who plays Sita in Nitesh Tiwari’s ‘Ramayana’, chose a saree that held its own without turning loud.

The saree: Pink, with patience stitched in

The drape was the Inayat saree set by Anushree Reddy, in hot pink organza. The fabric is sheer and weightless, so the colour glows rather than shouts.
The craft is where the saree earns its price, listed at ₹1,59,000. Silver and gold zardozi runs across it, and heavy hand-worked beadwork lines the borders. Delicate floral motifs are scattered over the body, as if someone had let a garden drift across the fabric and stitched each petal in place.

Organza and metallic embroidery are a tricky pairing under flashbulbs, because they can tip into glitter. Here the effect stays soft, with a shimmer you notice when she moves.

Underneath sat a blouse, densely worked with the same zardozi across the sleeves and neckline. Pink is an old-school Indian colour conversation, bold on paper but warm in practice. The blouse also carries the heaviest embroidery of the look, which let the saree stay airy.

The Jewels: sparkle, stacked and sacred

Sai Pallavi kept the jewellery traditional and let it do a lot of the talking. Diamond-studded drop earrings dangled from her ears, and statement rings sat on her fingers. A stack of bangles lined her right wrist.

The detail worth pausing on is on her left wrist: her signature wooden jaap mala, the prayer beads. Between the diamonds and the zardozi, a plain strand of wood is the most personal accessory of the night.

The glam: Soft focus

The beauty look matched the saree’s restraint. Her hair was centre-parted and worn in loose waves, with a rosy flush on the cheeks and nude lips. The one sharp note was a classic red bindi. It echoed the blouse and anchored the face, so everything else could stay soft. Siddhii Parekh styled the look.

Pink has been trailing Sai Pallavi through this film’s press cycle. At the Delhi trailer launch, she wore a golden silk saree with a rich magenta-pink border. In Los Angeles the pink moved from the border to the whole canvas, and the gold moved into the embroidery. The two looks work as a pair: one heritage-silk, one contemporary-organza, both in the same warm family of colours.

This look is more ornate than most of her outings, yet it still avoids anything excessive, with one saree, one blouse, jewellery that stays in its lane and make-up that doesn’t compete. The hot pink gets the attention, and the prayer beads quietly hold on to the rest of it.

Ramayana reaches theatres worldwide on November 5.
