Madhuri Dixit Nene made a case for timeless Indian craftsmanship this Vijayadashami, stepping out in a rich purple Banarasi brocade sari from designer Sanjay Garg’s label Raw Mango. Featuring intricate floral motifs enclosed within paisley-shaped buttas, the sari celebrated the artistry of traditional Indian weaving while drawing inspiration from the architectural heritage of the Mughal and Rajputana eras.

The sari features paisley-shaped buttas inspired by Mughal and Rajputana architectural inlay work.

The motifs, reminiscent of the intricate inlay work found in Mughal and Rajputana architecture, were crafted using the traditional kadwa weaving technique from Varanasi. The painstaking process involves weaving each motif separately, with at least two weavers working on a single sari, one handling the body and the other focusing on the motifs.

The paisley motif itself has a fascinating history in Indian textiles. Tracing its journey from Persia to Kashmir in the 15th century, the design became deeply rooted in Indian craftsmanship. Its distinctive shape is associated with the mango in several Indian languages, where it is known as kairi or ambi.

The traditional kadwa weaving technique lends intricate detailing to Madhuri Dixit Nene’s Raw Mango sari.

Dixit Nene paired the sari with a matching backless blouse featuring traditional mid-length sleeves. The gold borders along the sleeves complemented the detailing on the pallu, bringing the ensemble together without taking attention away from the intricate weave.

Celebrity stylist Sukriti Grover accessorised the look with jewellery from PNG Jewels. Her diamond and polki earrings featured square tops that transitioned into pendant-style drops, accented by a pair of birds on either side. The detailing echoed the floral motifs on the sari. Two statement cocktail rings and a coordinating kada embellished with diamonds set in polki completed the traditional jewellery edit.

For beauty, Dixit Nene wore her hair in a voluminous, slightly undone bun, with delicate tendrils framing her face. Pink chrysanthemums and baby's breath tucked into the hairstyle added a fresh floral touch. Makeup artist Billy Manik kept the makeup soft and luminous, with highlighted cheekbones, glossy lips, light pink eyeshadow and a purple bindi tying the look together.

Purple, particularly its deeper aubergine variations, continues to be a striking choice for traditional Indian occasionwear. Vogue India fashion features editor Ashwini Arun Kumar recommends pairing jewel-toned saris with navratna jewellery for a ceremonial finish, along with kitten heels featuring gold embroidery.
