Sunflower fields of Sambavarvadakarai: Cultivation declines; tourists disappointed

Sambavarvadakarai (TN): The once vibrant fields of sunflowers in Sambavarvadakarai have seen a decline this season, disappointing tourists and photographers alike who flock to this picturesque spot from Kerala.

In the past, sunflowers bloomed along the roadsides in places like Sengottai, Sambavarvadakarai, Ayikudy, Sundarapandiapuram and Churanda. However, due to fungal infections affecting seed quality and oil production last season, sunflower cultivation proved unprofitable for farmers. As a result, many fields that once blossomed with sunflowers are now occupied by crops such as corn, small onions, shallots and tomatoes.

This year, sunflowers are primarily seen in the Vannankulam area of Sambavarvadakarai, spread across just 20 acres. Although some sunflowers started blooming a week ago, the overall cultivation area has decreased significantly compared to that of previous years.

While the scenic beauty of sunflower fields used to attract numerous tourists and serve as popular locations for photography and wedding shoots, this year's focus has shifted more towards corn cultivation. Visitors arriving via the Kollam-Thirumangalam route through Aryankavu can still enjoy a scenic drive by turning left after the old Thiruvithamkoor Arch and travelling 20 km to reach Sambavarvadakarai, where intercropping of sunflowers and other crops can be observed.

Despite the decline in sunflower cultivation, the region remains accessible for those interested in exploring its agricultural landscape. However, taking guidance from local farmers or residents will be better for its inland location.
