Viral! Nehru Trophy captain's unique wedding ceremony in Kerala backwaters

In a unique wedding ceremony, a couple tied the knot in the middle of the picturesque Alappuzha backwaters. The wedding venue, a beautifully decorated stage, was set up at Kainakary in Vattakayal, a popular tourist destination. Kerala Tourism Minister P A Muhammed Riyas shared pictures of the event, which took place last week, on social media, capturing widespread attention.
First-of-its-kind ceremony
Although houseboat weddings have been common, this event marked the first time a couple tied the knot in the middle of the lake. The ceremony was held on a specially arranged Jankar at the DTPC's Kainakary Houseboat Terminal. It featured traditional Kerala art forms, adding to the cultural richness of the occasion. The bride, Haritha Anil, holds the distinction of being the only woman captain in the history of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. The groom, Harinath, hails from Chalakudy.
Spectacular celebration
Around 700 guests, including several foreign visitors, attended the wedding. The bride and groom arrived at the mandapam to the accompaniment of Vanchippattu and traditional art forms, making for a grand entrance. Haritha, who is also a senior forensic scientist with the Delhi Police, received special permission from the District Collector for the marriage ceremony to be held at this unique location.
Minister P A Muhammed Riyas extended his best wishes to Haritha and Harinath through social media. Tourism department officials have indicated plans to make the Kainakary Houseboat Terminal available for future weddings, offering couples a similarly unique experience.
