Kochi: Kerala is now turning into a coveted place for destination weddings. Moving away from traditional venues, more and more people are choosing rivers, seas and mountains as chosen destinations. In the previous years, there were less than 100 such weddings. But now, between 300-400 weddings are held annually in this manner. This includes weddings where the budget reaches crores of rupees. With more people choosing Kerala for their destination wedding, the income from the tourism sector in the state will also increase.

Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Alappuzha are the major centres of destination weddings in Kerala. There are also people who prefer Wayanad and Munnar. The tourism department is spending Rs 2 crores to promote wedding tourism.

Wedding budget

Destination wedding packages are available starting from Rs 15 lakh. The cost will go up depending on the chosen venue and other celebrations. Weddings with budgets up to Rs 5 crore are held in Kerala. Shaadi wedding Management Director Prijo Jose says that mostly people from North India choose Kerala as their wedding destination.

What is a destination wedding?

A destination wedding is when the invited guests and family of the bride and groom travel to a tourist destination for a wedding ceremony. These are usually held in resorts where the wedding party spends three-four days celebrating the couple with various events. These destinations are chosen based on ease of travel, availability of venue and the facilities offered.

The state plans on attracting more domestic as well as international couples to hold their weddings here. The plan is to utilize world-class event managers for this purpose. Extensive plans are being developed for this.
