NMC issues show cause notices to medical colleges, including those in Kerala, for violating standard

Thrissur: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued show-cause notices to nearly 50 per cent of medical colleges in the country for non-compliance with the established standards. 

The notice was issued to 349 out of 654 institutions in the country, including a medical college in Idukki. Surprisingly, 197 of the 349 institutions that received the notice are from the public sector. 

According to reports, a private medical college in Kerala has also received a notice for falsifying patient admissions. 

In 2020, NMC released detailed guidelines regarding the established standards for the medical colleges operating in the country. Based on this, the Medical Commission has also implemented online systems to monitor the functioning of the colleges. 

Previously, the authorities held tests at medical colleges to determine eligibility for recognition. Many alleged that institutions obtained permission by falsifying paperwork and lying about the services they offered.

NMC monitored the shortage of teaching staff, patient numbers, and student attendance at medical schools. According to the rules, teachers at these institutions must have a minimum of 75 per cent attendance. 

Surveillance cameras at OPs and other facilities are also linked to the Medical Commission, allowing them to monitor the institution's performance.
