Thiruvananthapuram: Health minister Veena George has launched a peritoneal dialysis (PD) scheme in 11 districts that enables patients to undergo free dialysis at home.

The new scheme will reduce the need for the patients to depend on the hospitals for hemodialysis, which is expensive and physically challenging.

It is a method of purifying the blood inside the body. It removes excess fluid, corrects electrolyte problems, and remove toxins in the patients facing kidney failure.

Currently, this scheme is available in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. This scheme will be adapted in others districts very soon, she said.

The minister added that stern action will be taken against the hospitals that deny dialysis to patients suffering from Covid-19.
