Dengue fever spreads in EKM: 6 deaths in 3 weeks, 4 hotspots identified

Kochi: With the onset of monsoon, cases of dengue fever are soaring in Ernakulam with six deaths being reported in the last three weeks. Thrikkakara municipality, Choornikkara, Vazhakulam and Mookkannoor panchayats have been declared as dengue hotspots, said district collector NSK Umesh.
“All necessary measures have been taken to curb the spread of the disease. People should clearly follow all the instructions given by the authorities,” added the collector.
In the wake of the ongoing scenario, a meeting of the panchayat, municipality authorities and the health department was convened on May 30. Also, ASHA workers have been tasked to visit houses and create awareness.
The lack of proper disposal of wastes has contributed significantly to the breeding of mosquitoes. Furthermore, cases of dengue fever have been reported in certain areas outside the hotspots in Kochi corporation.
“Fogging has been initiated as part of mosquito control measures. Necessary preventive medicines have been stocked. In case of fever or any other discomfort, people should report to the nearest health centre. Caution must be ensured for the next two-three weeks,” warned the collector.
Meanwhile, the collector has also sought daily reports over the fever control measures administered in the district. On Monday, a review meeting chaired by the collector was held to analyse the health situation.
