Thiruvananthapuram/Malappuram, Kerala: The stat's Finance Minister, KN Balagopal, presented the state budget for the upcoming fiscal year, highlighting a special allocation in memory of the late literary giant, MT Vasudevan Nair.

In a touching tribute to the acclaimed writer, the Kerala government has earmarked Rs 5 crore for the construction of a memorial near Thunchan Parambu, Tirur, in the first phase of the project. MT, who passed away on Christmas day 2024, was an unparalleled force in Malayalam literature and cinema, with his works leaving a lasting impact on generations of readers and filmgoers alike.

A glorious literary career

MT began his literary journey in his school years, and his first short story was published during his college days. His landmark novel Naalukettu (1958) won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, marking the beginning of a stellar career. MT’s works, including Randamoozham, a retelling of the Mahabharata from Bhima's perspective, have been celebrated as masterpieces in Malayalam literature.

Contributions to cinema, journalism

In addition to his literary success, MT made massive contributions to Malayalam cinema. His screenplay for Nirmalyam (1973) won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. MT also served as the editor of Mathrubhumi and later as president of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, cementing his legacy as a multifaceted cultural icon.

MT’s numerous accolades include the Padma Bhushan (2005) and the Jnanpith Award (1995), India’s highest literary honour. His death marks the end of an era in Malayalam literature and cinema, but his influence will endure through his work.
