Palakkad: Atham on August 30 will kick off the ten-day-long Onam celebration and Kudumbashree units across Kerala are in full swing to tap the seasonal market. This time 534 units took up flower farming, eyeing Onam special sales.

Marigold and chrysanthemum are the two varieties that will be offered by these units which took up cultivation in 127.5 acre of land.

The units in all districts of Kerala, except Palakkad, Kollam and Idukki are involved. Most of the units engaged in flower cultivation are from Alappuzha (294), followed by Thrissur (77) and Kannur (55).

As a part of celebrations, schools, colleges and institutions will have floral carpets and many take part in competitions as well. There is a high market potential for flowers during Onam.

Moreover, this Onam season comes after a two-year Covid-19 pandemic break and is expected to have grand commemoration.

It may be noted that the state has high reliance on nearby states for flowers. The entry of a large number of Kudumbashree units is likely to change market equations during the Onam season.
