Ginger prices crash in Kerala at Rs 80/kilo, dry ginger too

Kochi: Ginger prices in Kerala have taken a sharp dive, with the Kochi market now offering rates as low as ₹70-80 per kilogram. This marks a steep decline from last year’s prices, which soared above ₹200 per kilogram. The primary reason for the drop is high production, spurred by favourable weather conditions and increased cultivation by farmers hoping to capitalise on last year’s boom.

However, the price crash has left farmers in dire straits. Many had invested heavily in ginger cultivation, purchasing seeds at high rates. With Kerala's high production costs, most farmers had already shifted to cultivating ginger in Karnataka. Even there, the costs of labour and land leases have rendered profits elusive this season.

Dry ginger price declines

The decline in fresh ginger prices has also impacted dried ginger (sukku). Prices for dried ginger have fallen by ₹50 per kilogram compared to last year, currently ranging between ₹320-350 per kilogram. Despite this, dried ginger processing and storage are expected to increase, as sales typically peak between December and March.

Market demand remains highest for white dried ginger and larger varieties, though prices fluctuate based on quality.
