UPSC Prelims 2025 results expected shortly: Essential details for civil service aspirants

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is anticipated to announce the Civil Services Preliminary Examination (CSE Prelims) 2025 results by June 14. The preliminary test, conducted on May 25, serves as the first phase in the selection process for prestigious services including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS).
Following tradition, UPSC generally releases the prelims results within 15 to 20 days after the exam date. This year, the results will be published as a PDF file on the official UPSC website (upsc.gov.in). The file will list the roll numbers of candidates who have qualified for the Main examination but will not disclose individual marks or scores.
The prelims comprised two objective papers held in separate shifts on May 25: General Studies Paper I in the morning and the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) in the afternoon. Both papers are crucial, but only the General Studies paper carries qualifying marks. The CSAT acts as a qualifying test with a minimum threshold. Experts and candidates alike have reported that this year’s exam was particularly challenging, especially the CSAT, which many found demanding.
Cut-off trends to expect
Historical data shows varying cut-off marks influenced by the difficulty of papers. For instance, the 2023 prelims cut-off for the general category was notably low at 75.41 due to the tough CSAT paper. In contrast, 2020 saw a high cut-off of 92.51, reflecting an easier exam. Aspirants should watch closely for the 2025 cut-off, expected to reflect the reported difficulty of the papers.

Additional information on application process
This year, UPSC implemented a One-Time Registration (OTR) system for candidates. The OTR profile, created once, remains valid for future UPSC exams. Candidates who had already registered through OTR could directly apply for the preliminary exam without repeated registration.
Candidates clearing the prelims will next need to fill out the Detailed Application Form-I (DAF-I) to appear for the Mains exam, scheduled to commence on August 22, 2025. Preparing early for this stage is advisable given the increasing competition and complexity of the civil services examination.
