Advance your research career: PhD programs in sciences at University of Mumbai DAE CEBS

University of Mumbai - Department of Atomic Energy - Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM DAE CEBS), an aided institute of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Govt. of India, has invited applications from eligible Indian nationals for its full-time PhD programmes in Schools of (i) Physical Sciences and (ii) Mathematical Sciences.
Eligibility: (i) School of Physical Sciences: M.Sc. in Physics/equivalent (background in Plasma Physics, Condensed Matter Physics or Computational Physics is desirable) (ii) School of Mathematical Sciences: M.Sc. in Mathematics/equivalent (background in Algebra, Topology and Analysis is desirable)
Essential requirements: Applicant should have at least 55% marks in aggregate in the PG Programme or its equivalent grade ‘B’ on the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in the point scale, wherever the grading system has been followed). A relaxation of 5% of marks/equivalent grade will be allowed for the applicants belonging to SC, ST and Divyangjan categories.
Age: A maximum of 28 years as on December 31, 2025. The age limit will be relaxed by 3 years for the OBC-NCL candidates, by 5 years for the SC/ST candidates and by 10 years for the Divyangjan candidates.
Qualification in UGC-CSIR-NET (JRF or LS) / SLET / GATE / NBHM / JEST / DBT-BET / DST INSPIRE or PET conducted by the University of Mumbai / Teachers’ Fellowship examinations is an essential eligibility criterion. Selected candidates will be eligible for a DAE Fellowship or may activate their own fellowship from DBT, DST (INSPIRE), UGC/CSIR/NBHM, etc.
Fellowships: All candidates joining the Ph.D. programme will receive Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) instituted by the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India, with emoluments of Rs. 37,000/- per month and HRA @30% as applicable for the first two years and upgradation to Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) from the third year onwards with a stipend of ₹42,000/- per month plus HRA @30% as applicable, subject to terms and conditions laid down by DAE from time to time. Selected candidates are also entitled to a contingency grant of ₹60,000/- per year.
Mode of selection: Selection will be made based on the merit list prepared after a written test and /or an interview conducted by each School of UM-DAE CEBS. Reservation will be as per the reservation policy of the Government of India.
Duration: 5 years, including UGC-prescribed coursework as mandated from time to time.
Accommodation: A very limited accommodation (3 female and 3 male candidates) for the 1st year is available on the UM-DAE CEBS campus for candidates whose hometown lies outside the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, and it will be allotted strictly based on merit.
Degree: Candidates will be awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Basic Sciences (with specialisation in Mathematics or Physics) by the University of Mumbai after successful completion of the program.
Candidates enrolled in the PhD program will be bound by the rules and regulations of the PhD program of UM-DAE CEBS.
