National Film Development Corporation of India (National Film Archive of India) and the Film &Television Institute of India (FTII) will jointly conduct a three-week, full-time Film Appreciation Course in Pune in June 2026.

This is an intensive course designed for the general public to promote comprehensive understanding and insights into the nature of cinema and other related forms and practices. These include recent developments like independent films, digital streaming and the OTT media.

The curriculum includes theoretical study of the art and history of film and the development of cinema as a medium of art and communication. Conceptual areas of cinema such as time, space, mise-en-scene (placing on stage or setting the stage), genres, movements, image and sound aesthetics will feature prominently in the programme. There will also be a brief introduction to the history and aesthetics of documentaries. Participants will engage with a curated selection of Indian and international film classics, short fiction, and non-fiction works for critical analysis and discussion. The programme will be taught by the core faculty, along with eminent guest faculty members of FTII.

Applicants may note that this is not a course in film production or scriptwriting. The emphasis is completely on understanding and analysis of films and film history, and there will be no practice-based inputs included in the syllabus.

The course will be conducted at FTII- NFDC (NFAI), Phase II, Near Doordarshan Kendra, Rambaug Colony, Kothrud, Pune from 1st June to 19th June, 2026 (excluding Saturdays and Sundays). The sessions will be from 9.30 am to 8.30 pm (including film screenings).

The medium of instruction will primarily be English.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a graduation degree. In exceptional cases, HSC/12th pass applicants may be considered.

Applicants must be at least 21 years old as of 01.01.2026.

Application fee is Rs. 1000/- to be paid online.

Selection: FTII will review all applications and forward them to a scrutiny committee for evaluation. The parameters to be considered for shortlisting is given in the notification page. Shortlisted candidates will also be notified via email at their registered email addresses with details about their selection and the subsequent fee payment process. List of final selected participants will be published within two weeks after the receipt of applications. The course will have a minimum number of 30 participants and maximum number will be about 60 participants (including out-station and local participants).

Course fee is Rs. 16,000/-.

Participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodation and meals. However, limited triple-sharing accommodation (for 30–40 participants) may be available. Priority will be given to differently-abled, female, and outstation participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Separate charges apply. Requests for accommodation must be sent within three days of receiving the shortlisting email. Accommodation fee will be Rs. 6000/- per candidate on triple-sharing basis.
