QS World University Rankings 2025: IIT Delhi takes the lead, IIT Bombay ranks second in India

New Delhi: In the QS World University Rankings for 2025, IIT Delhi has emerged as India’s top institution, surpassing IIT Bombay. This shift in rankings highlights the continued growth of Indian higher education on the global stage. The rankings reveal India's remarkable rise, with two universities making it into the global top 50 and seven securing spots in the top 100.

IIT Delhi has moved up to 44th position in the world, improving from 46th last year. The institute earned a remarkable 99% employer reputation score, reflecting its strong industry ties. Close behind, IIT Bombay occupies the 48th spot globally, with an even higher employer reputation score of 99.5% and a solid academic reputation score of 96.6%, securing its place as India’s second-best university.

Several other prestigious Indian institutions have also earned notable positions in the global rankings. IIT Madras ranks 56th, IIT Kharagpur is at 60th, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) follows at 62nd. IIT Kanpur has secured 67th, and the University of Delhi is ranked 81st, all placing within the top 100 universities worldwide. 

The University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES) has shown the most impressive improvement, climbing an impressive 70 places to land at 148th position. Other Indian universities such as IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Chandigarh University (120), and VIT have also made it to the top 150.

The University of Delhi has notably improved its standing, moving up from 94th to 81st, bolstered by an impressive 96.4% score in the International Research Network indicator. Anna University also stood out by achieving a perfect score of 100 in the Papers Per Faculty indicator, showcasing its significant contribution to research.

More than 15 universities have earned scores above 99% in the faculty with PhD indicator, indicating high academic standards. Furthermore, North Eastern Hill University and the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore both scored 100 in the faculty-student ratio, underlining their exceptional academic quality.
