Gujarat Institute of Disaster Management announces Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme 2026

The Gujarat Institute of Disaster Management (GIDM), established under the Government of Gujarat, has invited applications for its Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme.

This Fellowship is a key initiative under GIDM’s mandate to promote innovative, interdisciplinary, and policy-relevant research in the fields of Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change, and Resilience Studies. The programme aims to strengthen applied and transdisciplinary research that enhances the resilience of communities and systems against disasters and climate risks. 

Research areas and themes

Postdoctoral research at GIDM will broadly focus on:

  • Disaster Risk Management
  • Climate Change and Environmental Studies
  • Public Health
  • Industrial Safety
  • Other allied and emerging interdisciplinary areas related to disaster resilience and sustainable development

Roles and responsibilities of Fellows

Fellows will contribute up to 8 hours per week towards GIDM training activities such as teaching or workshops, as assigned by the Mentor.

Fellows must submit original research work, ensuring no duplication or simultaneous submissions elsewhere.

Active participation in GIDM’s academic ecosystem through seminars, lectures, and collaborative events is mandatory.

Each Fellow must publish at least two research papers in peer-reviewed, high-impact journals during the Fellowship tenure.

Fellows are expected to contribute to public engagement and institutional visibility, including participation in annual programmes, newsletters, and media outreach.

The Mentor will guide the Fellow to ensure originality, ethical integrity, and alignment with GIDM’s research priorities. The Mentor shall certify research proposals, procurement requests, and progress reports.

Eligibility Criteria (Indian candidates)

Applicants must:

1. Hold a Ph.D. degree from a recognised university with:

  • At least 3 publications in peer-reviewed, high-impact journals (preferably Scopus/Web of Science indexed)
  • At least 2 publications in reputed conference proceedings

2. Have secured:

  • Minimum 60% marks at the postgraduate level and **55% at the undergraduate level
  • Relaxation to 55% (PG) and 50% (UG) for SC/ST/SEBC/EWS/Differently-abled candidates

Candidates awaiting Ph.D. viva-voce results may apply, provided all Ph.D. requirements are completed. Proof of doctoral completion must be submitted at the time of joining, failing which the offer will be cancelled.

Employed candidates must submit proof of study leave or sabbatical for a minimum period of one year, extendable based on performance.

Fellowship details

Number of Fellowships: 2

Tenure: 1 year, extendable up to 2 years based on performance

Progress will be reviewed bi-annually by the Progress Assessment Committee (PAC)

Fellows must submit six-monthly and annual progress reports

Fellowship amount

  • Rs. 1,00,000 per month (consolidated, including HRA)
  • Annual increment of Rs. 10,000, subject to PAC evaluation

Contingency grant

  • Rs. 75,000 per annum for research-related expenses (fieldwork, software, books, conferences, etc.)
  • Equipment purchased will become the property of GIDM after the Fellowship
  • Differently-abled Fellows will receive an additional Rs. 2,000 per month towards reader/escort assistance

Travel grant

One international conference travel grant up to Rs. 1,00,000 during the Fellowship tenure, subject to approval
