Discrepancies alleged in evaluating exam papers of Kerala University distance courses

Thiruvananthapuram: Complaints have surfaced regarding careless evaluation of exam papers and lack of grievance redress from the School of Distance Education of Kerala University.

Over 30 students of B Com (Corporation) were awarded marks from 0 to 3 in the ‘Fundamentals of Income Tax’ exam in the fifth semester. The same students secured high marks in the sixth semester. Both semester results were published on June 30.

When they suspected irregularities and complained, authorities forced them to apply for re-evaluation, which comes with a hefty fee. They then approached the higher authorities. 

A few students who appeared for the exam were even shown as being absent.

In another controversy, more than 100 students who had appeared for the BA Malayalam exam were declared failed. It is alleged that, in this case, the result was published without even evaluating their answer sheets.

A majority of these students had appeared for exams at Karyavattom campus, Thiruvananthapuram Arts College, and Karamana women’s college. The exam department has no clear answers for the grieving student community.

Exam controller summoned

Meanwhile the university authorities have identified serious discrepancies in the mark evaluation processes. They have accused the examination centres of not following the guidelines. It is known that the exam controller is summoned by the vice-chancellor for a direct meeting on Wednesday.
