Driving with Google Maps? Turn on audio, advises MVD

Vaikom: The Motor Vehicles Department has stated that enabling the audio feature while using navigation apps like Google Maps can make journeys safer. People increasingly rely on navigation maps to reach unfamiliar destinations.
Navigation apps are operated on the vehicle's dashboard screen or a mobile phone. However, most people are not inclined to enable the audio feature in these apps. If the audio is enabled, the driver can receive timely information about upcoming turns, traffic points, hazard warnings, and suggestions for faster routes without having to look at the navigation app on the dashboard or mobile screen.
The department says this helps in driving with more attention and efficiency.
If the audio is not enabled, constantly looking at the screen or mobile phone running the navigation app can reduce the driver's concentration. The department warns that frequently taking hands off the steering wheel to operate the apps can invite accidents. Devices running navigation apps should be mounted in vehicles in a way that does not obstruct the view of the road or divert the driver's attention.
