Maruti Suzuki to unveil first electric vehicle December 2

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. plans to unveil prices for its first electric vehicle, the e-Vitara SUV, on Dec. 2 through its NEXA premium dealerships. The company, which holds about 40 per cent of India's passenger vehicle market, enters the electric segment amid surging demand, with EV registrations topping 2 million units in 2025 and electric car sales up 105 per cent year-on-year through October.
Export-First Push from Gujarat Plant
Production began in August at Maruti's Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the initial export batch. More than 6,000 units shipped to 12 European markets, including the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Norway between August and September, with annual exports targeting 50,000 to 100,000 units across over 100 countries. "The start of export of e-Vitara to Europe is indeed a proud and defining moment for us," Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said.
Specs on HEARTECT-e Platform
The e-Vitara rides on Suzuki's HEARTECT-e platform with two battery choices: a 49 kWh pack yielding 142 bhp and 189 Nm torque, or a 61 kWh version offering 172 bhp in a front-wheel-drive setup. The larger battery promises over 500 km range and 0-80 per cent DC fast charging in 50 minutes, plus features like Level 2 ADAS, 360-degree camera, ventilated seats and seven airbags. Expected pricing sits between 17 lakh and 22 lakh rupees.
Rivals in the Growing EV Market
Tata Motors leads India's electric car sales at 37.7 per cent share, trailed by MG Motor at 28.7 per cent and Mahindra at 21.5 per cent. The e-Vitara targets competitors like Tata Curvv EV at 17.49-22.24 lakh rupees, Hyundai Creta Electric at 18.02-24.55 lakh and MG ZS EV. Two-wheelers claim half of all EV registrations as the market expands.
