Tourists bring solace to farmers in Kanthalloor
Marayoor: The tourists and visitors are proving to be a boon to the Kanthalloor farmers who are reeling under poverty as their vegetable produce couldn’t be sold at a reasonable price.
Since the government agencies stopped procurement, farmers are having a hard time as the mediators offer meagre price for vegetables.
However, the tourists visiting here buy the produce at a reasonable rate.
Carrot is priced at Rs 25 while cabbage costs Rs 20 per kilogram. Passion fruit is sold at Rs 200, garlic at Rs 250 and strawberry at Rs 500 to Rs 600. Winter fruits like blackberry costs Rs 1000 per kilogram.
The climate change also adversely affected the farming here.
The farmers have pinned their hopes on the Easter and Vishu holidays. Visitors from other states are expected even though a surge in Covid cases is reported.
