Limited-stop boat service on Alappuzha-Kottayam route
The water transport department has decided to arrange limited-stop boat service between Alappuzha and Kottayam. Earlier a high-speed boat was launched on the Vaikom-Ernakulam route.
Water transport department director Shaji V Nair said that the new boat will facilitate fast service in Alappuzha-Kottayam route with limited number of stops.
The preliminary construction activities of the boat have started. The design plan has been prepared. The super structure works are progressing and after this, the interior works will be completed. The department hopes to start service by the end of December after completing all works.
With the new boat service, it will take lesser time than the bus service to reach Kottayam from Alappuzha. The distance through waterways is 36 km from Alappuzha to Kottayam. This distance will be covered in 1.5 hours. The high tide and low tide may affect the schedule.
The interior works of the boat will take quite a while as the security precautions have to be set up. The boat is manufactured by Praga Company and Rs 1.85 crore is the expected cost of the boat. The company will be responsible for the boat until it is handed over after port registration.
The boat can accommodate 120 passengers. A part of the boat will be air-conditioned with a seating capacity of 40. The service will be availble during the office hours.
The distance from Alappuzha to Kottayam through road is 47 km. The boat service will be more accessible and profitable to office goers, as it is less costly and takes less time to reach the destination. The stops will be limited to five.
The boat service will be available on the Alappuzha – Kumarakom route during day hours for the tourists.
