Kannur: The ninth edition of the world’s biggest military sailing event, Admiral’s Cup Sailing Regatta, hosted by the Indian Naval Academy (INA) at Ezhimala will begin on Monday.

The naval officers hailing from 30 foreign countries, including USA, UK, Israel, France and Germany, will be participating in the sailing competition. From India, INA and National Defence Academy will be participating.

The Admiral's Cup Sailing Regatta was instituted in 2010 under the burgee of Yachting Association of India as a forum for competition in sailing in a regatta format amongst the officer trainees of friendly foreign navies. Then only eight teams participated in the regatta.

The sailing competitions are held at the Ettikulam Bay close by the INA campus. Small fibre boats with sails are used for the race. The teams will take part in 16 races in four days. There will be two boats each from all the participating countries.

At the end of the competition, a team champion and individual champion will be selected. The regatta is conducted in Laser Radial class of boats.

The event was inaugurated on Sunday by Naval Academy commandant RB Pandit. The sailing competitions will be extended to next four days starting Monday.
