Accidents, atrocities surge in Varkala tourism spot
Varkala: Accidents and violence are on the surge in the vicinity of Papanasam tourist sites. Within a week, four accidents were reported where a person was killed and two sustained severe injuries.
Last Friday, a car driven in high speed smashed against a wall at Thiruvambadi beach road claiming the life of an Idava native youth. Another car crash was reported at the helipad the next day. A car which was coming out of the parking area was hit by another speeding car.
On Monday, a car lost control and hit a wall of a shop at the Manglav junction in Thiruvambadi and the passengers had a miraculous escape. Another accident resulted when a speeding car hit a bike near the same location. The drunken driver was arrested by the police.
Bike and car stunts
Bike and car stunts are a usual feature at the helipad here. Several local tourists usually visit the helipad during holidays and find the stunts a nuisance. On many occasions, the stunts performed after consuming alcohol or drugs lead to accidents.
The tourists who use drugs and cause rash driving pose a threat. Locals had stopped clearing off a place where a car met with an accident demanding proper inspection of the vehicle the other day. The police found a bottle of liquor from the car later.
Atrocities under alcohol intoxication surge near Papanasam. Three days ago, a group of drunken men from Thiruvananthapuram created a ruckus at a restaurant and helipad. They even tried to harm the locals. When police reached the spot, the goons threatened them too citing connections with influential people. Later police took them to the station.
Though there were demands for stringent surveillance by the police nothing has come through with limited staff.
