Pottery gets new life through ‘PEPPER' tourism’
Vaikom: PEPPER tourism was introduced in Vaikom as part of the Responsible Tourism Mission. The project was launched to explore the unexplored destinations wherein the local community is benefitted by tourism with the sustained effort on environment conservation.
People’s Participation for Planning and Empowerment through Responsible Tourism project was first launched in the state at Thalayazham here.
The traditional pottery sector has obtained a new life with the PEPPER project.
Special gram sabhas were held to identify those engaged in traditional labours in the Vaikom taluk and were given training for the making value added products.
“I disassociated from the job for the lack of income. But as part of tourism, bigger market for the projects can be found with a reasonable income. So I am back in business,” said Rajesh Indamthuruthy, a traditional potter.
Many kitchen utensils and flower pots are being made here.
The online platform of Kerala Responsible Tourism Network will be used for selling the products. A contract will be made with hotels in tourist destinations like Kumarakom for better sale, said K Roopeshkumar, Responsible Tourism Mission coordinator.
