The church was built under influence of Portuguese architectural style in the 16th century. Basilica of Bom Jesus is situated 10 kms from Panaji near the Madovi river in Old Goa. I
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The cathedral of the Church holds the remains of St. Xavier's in a silver casket. According to tradition, once in ten years the casket of St. Xavier was opened for prayers and public viewing.
Even foreigners come here to witness the historic moment. The saint is said to have miraculous powers of healing.
The interior of the church is in abundance of minute handiworks and crafts.
The church also holds paintings of scenes taken from the life of St. Francis Xavier. The mausoleum, on the top of which is placed the silver casket with the body of St. Francis Xavier, was the gift of the last of the Medicis, Cosimo III, the Grand Duke of Tuscany.
