With the commencement of migration season for butterflies, the Thumboormuzhi butterfly park in Chalakudy is flooded by these tiny beautiful creatures. The migration season starts from May last to August. The wind flowing from the West to the east helps in the migration.
The study conducted in 2008-2009, had revealed that there are around 140 butterflies in the Thumboormuzhi park. Biggest butterfly Garuda and Kerala state butterfly Buddha Mayoori are also found here.
Blue Glassy Tiger, Dark Blue Tiger, Striped Tiger, Common Indian Crow and Plain Tiger are the varieties mainly found here in this season. These butterflies can be sighted in the park on a clear sunny day.
The plants and the climate found adjacent to the forest and river favour the existence of butterflies here. The garden is mainly covered with plants that attract butterflies.
Thumboormuzhi has been approved as a butterfly centre by the national Institute of Agro-biological Research Centre in Japan. Many of their journals mention of Thumboormuzhi butterfly park. A scientist there, Innovo Thakashi, has visited the park several times for research purposes.
