Tourists can admire the pink carpet at Vembanad lake till March 2020
Kumarakom: The backwaters of Kottayam is abloom with pink and is carpeted with the beautiful water lilies or ambal flowers. As the bloom epicentre Malarikkal Padam is getting ready for paddy cultivation after removing this, the tourists are visiting the banks of Vembanad lake to admire the beauty of ambal.
The water lilies are in full bloom stretching from Cheepunkal backwater till Puthenkayal region which is over 20 acres of coastline. The water lilies may be damaged to some extent only if salt water creeps into the lake. Visitors can admire the splendid beauty of ambal till March 2020 when the Thaneermukkam bund is opened.
Visitors flock to the banks in adjoining villages which is blanketed by the bloom. The visitors influx has been rising and they can enjoy the pink carpet walking on the banks from Cheepunkal bridge bus stop on the Kumarakom Cherthala Road till the Pennar river banks which stretches upto 750 metres. But if visitors need to pluck flowers or see the flowers closely, they have to hire a country boat.
One can see long queues of people desirous to take a house boat or Shikara boat to see the flowers in bloom. The flowers bloom during the night and close up during daytime. The spectacular sight will be up till early next year and then will be destroyed for other cultivation.
