Pookode, Kuruva, Pazhassi Park… Tourists, Wayanad is open!
The tourism sector which is facing a decline after the floods is reviving. There was heavy rush of tourists on Sunday at Pookode and Kuruva island. There have been more than expected number of tourists at Kuruva island. The renovation works have almost been completed at Pazhassi park.
District collector AR Ajayakumar said that all tourist centers in the district will be open for tourists by the end of this month. He was addressing a media conference. The basic facilities and other arrangements will be ready by December 15.
A mountain cycling championship will be organized as a prelude to the opening of the tourism season. There are plans to make Wayanad a permanent venue for this. The acquisition of projects hosted by Priyadarshini Society by DTPC has also been finalized.
Primary consideration has been given to the regional development facilities at all tourist centres. Toilets will be opened in all cities including Kalpetta. The take over of new tourist centers are also under consideration.
Sub collector NSK Umesh and DTPC secretary B Anand also attended the media conference.
Mountain cycling on Dec 7, 8
The international mountain cycling championship will be organized on Friday and Saturday at Priyadarshini estate in Mananthavady. In the international cross country competition category, participants from 11 countries will attend.
40 cyclists from Army, Railway and also from other states will be participating in the national-level competitions. In the cycling competitions held for the first time in Kerala, there will be 20 participants.
Cash prizes have been arranged for the winners of international-level competitions. The prizes range from Rs 1,50,000, 1,00,000, 50,000, 25,000, 20,000 respectively for the first five positions. While at the national level, the first four positions will be awarded Rs 1,00,000, 50,000, 25,000, 20,000 accordingly for the men’s category and Rs 50,000, 25,000, 20,000, 15,000 accordingly for the women’s category.
The closing ceremony and prize distribution will be held on Saturday at 3 pm. Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran will the chief guest for the event. The event will be hosted jointly by District Tourism Promotion Council and Kerala Adventure Tourism Promotion Society.
A cycle rally will be organized as part of promoting the event on Tuesday at Kalpetta, on Wednesday at Bathery and on Thursday at Mananthavady.
